Early in the Civil War a delegation from Baltimore presented President Abraham Lincoln with a Bible. He told them, “This great book is the best gift God gave to man.” Lincoln recognized that the Bible was no ordinary book, but was God’s revelation—a gracious gift from God to us. And the Bible continues to be a bestseller.

God who is our Creator has graciously given us His instruction book, the Bible, so that we may live fulfilled lives in harmony with our divine Creator. Having problems in life? Perhaps you are not following your Maker’s instructions. 3,000 years ago, Israel’s greatest king, David, wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Each day read the Bible, and God will direct your steps.

The Bible is living and powerful truth. It transforms our life as no other book. It has sustained millions of people down through the centuries as it is the very Word of God. It is through the Bible that we receive the wisdom that leads to salvation. It is as we hear the Bible preached, as we read it, and meditate on it, that we come to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

The Bible has changed the lives of the worst of people: people like the apostle Paul who was a persecutor of the first century church. People like John Newton who was a slave trader, and later wrote, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” Down through the centuries, the Bible has transformed the lives of millions of ordinary people. So we must not think of the Bible just as a book of morality or history, it is packed with the supernatural power of God: a power to change lives.

Both of my grandfathers came to faith in Jesus Christ through the preaching of the Word of God in circumstances where they didn’t want to hear it. They were initially hostile to the Word of God, but their hearts were softened through the power of the Holy Spirit when they heard the Word of God. They then dedicated their lives to Jesus Christ, and this had a dramatic impact in their own lives and families.

When I was 12 years old I went to camp, where I heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ preached through the Word of God. I heard the old, old story of Jesus and his love, and quietly received Christ as my personal Savior. Since then I have seen hundreds of people have their lives turned upside down through the power of the Bible.

Let me encourage you every day to spend time reading the truths of the Word of God. It will be food for your soul. You can depend on it for all of life, and for all eternity. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the Word of the Lord abides forever.
