You may be looking at the headlines of the recent devastating hurricanes and yesterday’s earthquake in Mexico, and wondering what God is saying to us.
We know God is in control. God is in the storm. He never abandons us. He mourns with those who mourn. But our hearts continue to break for those who have been personally touched by these tragedies. Why God has allowed these things to happen? What, if anything, is He saying to us?
In Luke 13:4, Jesus was questioned about a recent tragedy. A tower in Siloam had fallen, killing eighteen people. He was asked whether those killed had been singled out for their sins. His answer was “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:5).
What did He mean by this? Life is brief. Judgment is coming. Our lives are in the hands of God, and we never know when our lives on earth may end. Our Lord is teaching a sobering message. We must be ready, and be right with God through repentance and trust in Jesus Christ. Then, in God’s grace, we are eternally secure.
