Following Jesus is not easy. Being an authentic follower of Jesus Christ requires perseverance and endurance. We have three enemies: the devil, our own sinful desires, and the world. In the Christian life there are temptations, disappointments, opposition, persecution, failures, and discouragements. It is easy to give up, to quit, to drift back into accepting the values of our culture.
So the Holy Scriptures exhort us to “run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2). We are to keep pressing on, fighting the good fight, finishing the race, keeping the faith.
